Dear Edgar, I am writing to express my personal appreciation of the Peyresq Workshop. It was the first time that I participated in this series of well known workshops. I was truly impressed. As you know well, for the last 20 years or so, one of my duties at the International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste Italy has been to organize or supervise organization of International Meetings of very high standard. There is hardly any scientist of reputation in our field in the world who has not participated in one or more of our activities. ICTP hosts about 5000 participants in its activities every year. With this long history of organizing scientific activities I would have thought that it should be impossible to create any new format which has already not been experimented at the ICTP. However, having participated in the Peyresq meeting in June I realized that I was wrong. Your workshop is unique in many respects. First of all it's unique site and the isolation which goes with it and the informal nature of the meetings gives rise to a very rich intellectual environment. The ample time put at the disposal of a small number of highly motivated and top class scientists made it possible for us to engage in depth discussion of many aspects of the main theme of the workshop. Secondly the scope of topics discussed, although remaining within the main framework of the workshop, was vast. For me it was a very pleasant surprise to learn that one of the participants from US, Steve Carlip, proposed fresh thoughts which in principle should enable us to set up an experimental verification of an idea which I have proposed together with Tom Kibble of Imperial College of London more than 25 years ago. Before coming to Peyresq Steve and myself knew each other only by name. This is yet one more characteristic of Peyresq, namely, creating an environment which makes it possible for us to meet each other which would otherwise probably be impossible. This gives rise to new scientific collaborations and hopefully to new results. Thanks to this particular incident I have decided to restart reflecting on my own old idea. I thank you very much for inviting me to participate in the Peyresq meeting of 2007. I will make all the effort to program my 2007 schedule such that I am able to come to Peyresq again. De l'avis général, cette Ecole a été un succès unanimement apprécié, et ceci est dû pour une large part aux excellentes conditions de travail, d'hébergement et d'intendance dont nous avons pu disposer. Comme nous en étions convenus, nous avons restreint la participation au nombre maximal de 45 inscrits (orateurs et auditeurs confondus) et ce nombre nous semble à l'expérience convenir parfaitement. Aller au-delà poserait sans doute des problèmes pratiques mais le restreindre serait dommageable dans la mesure où nous devrions refuser trop de bonnes candidatures (cette année par exemple, nous avons reçu 50 demandes pour 38 places). La tenue de cette 1ére Ecole n'a pu que nous conforter dans notre idée d'initier avec elle un cycle annuel et, comme nous en étions également convenus par un précédent courrier, je vous confirme la réservation que nous avons faite de la période du 22 au 28 juillet 2007 pour notre 2ème Ecole d'Eté de Peyresq. En vous renouvelant mes remerciements que j'étends à l'ensemble de votre équipe, je vous prie de croire, chère Madame Smets, à l'assurance de mes sentiments les meilleurs. . L'an passé, je me suis inscrit au stage de botanique organisé par Monsieur le Professeur Jean Lejoly du 3 au 12 juillet 2005, pour raviver un peu les souvenirs bien ternis que j'avais en Botanique. Il serait très prétentieux de ma part de prétendre, d'une manière même détournée, porter un jugement sur ce grand scientifique. Mais ma formation universitaire, mon expérience d'enseignant à l'Université pendant plus de 25 ans et maintenant les fonctions de direction que j'occupe me permettent certainement d'avoir l'audace de venir témoigner auprès de vous sur ce que j'ai vu et ce que j'ai vécu lors de ce stage. La science de Monsieur Lejoly est reconnue par tous, vous le savez. Accueillir au moment de ce stage, l'un des plus grands floristes de France (Monsieur le Professeur Jauzein) constitue une preuve évidente de son ouverture d'esprit. Mais, en connaisseur et en professionnel, j'ai pu apprécier ses énormes talents de pédagogue. Auprès de ses étudiants (parmi lesquels il y avait de nombreux étrangers), auprès d'un public peu rompu aux arcanes de la botanique - je m'inclus dans ce type de stagiaires - Monsieur Lejoly rayonne d'enthousiasme, remontant sans cesse le moral de son auditoire, faisant partager son enthousiasme à tous et faisant finalement, aimer autant la botanique que cette belle région de Peyresq. A tout point de vue (science, accueil, hébergement, nourriture, ambiance) le stage de botanique en juillet dernier a été remarquable. Mes collaborateurs savent combien mes compliments sont rares, mais justifiés : vraiment, et c'est là l'objet de ce courriel, je pense que c'est un grand honneur pour l'association que vous animez, de disposer d'un scientifique d'un tel renom faisant autant rayonner l'amour et l'honneur de Peyresq. Je voulais, depuis plusieurs mois maintenant, porter ce témoignage. We were deeply impressed, not only by your very chaleureux welcome and entertainment including a wonderful lunch - but also by your willingness to discuss ALL questions that needed to come on the table. In meeting with you, I found full confirmation for the belief I had before: that your fundamental goal in providing Peyresq to the scientific community is one that I feel very close to. People of the highest compentence need to meet and they need to find time to interact without having to be worried by practical matters around them. I am therefore very pleased to tell you that we have received full "go ahead" from the ALTER-Net Network Management Group in their recent meeting to return to Peyresq yet again in 2007, based on your extremely kind invitation! Sabine and I are certain that all parties involved are very happy about this decision, and we ourselves couldn't be happier. I would like to tell you that we did indeed visit Sweden, just as we had been visiting you. We saw a school campus which could have provided facilities for a programme similar to ours. But for a number of reasons we found it much less stimulating than Peyresq. More importantly, we had the strong notion that we are, together with you (and also with Jean and the rest of the team) on a track to something of lasting importance. And this "something" is really connected to Peyresq. Luckily, the ALTER-Net officials understood this view when we presented it to them. So, if the fondation is still willing to host us, then we shall be very grateful - and also glad to accept all aspects of the discussion we had with you in Brussels. I suppose Sabine will be happy to begin discussing details with Monique and you in the near future. Here I would only like to stress one point that I raised already in Brussels: Sylviane and Sisou are indeed enormously important for us (as will be next years' chef of course), and if we can adjust some aspects of the programme, including the arrival and departure days in a way that gives them some rest - then we are pleased to do exactly that. Also, we will return to Jean's excellent idea to arrange dinner of the excursion day some place else, as this gives us more time for the trip and again some rest for the Peyresq team. I suppose Sabine will be happy to begin discussing details with Monique and you in the near future. Here I would only like to stress one point that I raised already in Brussels: Sylviane and Sisou are indeed enormously important for us (as will be next years' chef of course), and if we can adjust some aspects of the programme, including the arrival and departure days in a way that gives them some rest - then we are pleased to do exactly that. Also, we will return to Jean's excellent idea to arrange dinner of the excursion day some place else, as this gives us more time for the trip and again some rest for the Peyresq team. But these are all practical matters that will be joyful to arrange together with you. Once again, I thank you very much for your warmth and friendship - and for your hospitality.
